9:05 pmWhat the counter taught me

For thirty years, women over 50 came to my counter for the expensive jar.

They wanted the cream in the gold box. I sold it to them. Then, at home, I watched my mother do something that cost almost nothing, and her skin stayed soft year after year.

The jar was never the secret. The order was. Water goes into the skin first, while it is still damp. Then something plain holds it there through the night. That is the whole idea behind every routine in this book, and it is why a small jar from the drugstore can do work people pay department-store prices for.

“Water first, then seal. Everything else is detail.”

The detail is what I write down for you: how much, in what order, with which hands, and what to do when your skin says no.

NIGHT
9:20 pmThe 28 nights

Not everything on the first night. One small step each night.

My clients who changed everything at once gave up by Friday. The ones who added one thing a night kept it for years. So the plan in the book does it that way.

Nights 1 to 7

The night order

The gentle cleanse, the ten-second damp skin, the seal. Learn the four steps until your hands know them.

Nights 8 to 14

Lines and cheeks

Add the forehead press, the upward palm press and the mouth-corner seal.

Nights 15 to 21

Eyes and neck

The ring-finger rule for the eyes, then the neck and jawline the face routine forgets.

Nights 22 to 28

Spots, hands, your shelf

The spot-fading order, the cotton-glove night, and a shelf that is yours for life.

A one-month paper calendar with pencil checks taped inside a bathroom cabinet

There is a skin diary at the back for your checks, and the morning-light chapter shows you how to look at your skin without fooling yourself.

What you can expect, plainly: skin that looks softer, fuller and more rested. Not a new face. I spent thirty years telling women the truth at the counter, and I'm not going to stop in a book.

What a small jar can do, and what no jar can do.

What this book does

  • Uses what you can buy this week at any American drugstore
  • Gives the exact amount and order for every routine
  • Has a version without petroleum, and one for side sleepers
  • Covers the eyes, spots, neck, jawline and hands, not only the face
  • Tells you when a spot needs a doctor instead

What it will not do

  • It is not a facelift. Nothing in a jar is.
  • It won't sell you a cream. There is nothing to buy from me.
  • It is not medical advice. I'm an esthetician, not a dermatologist.
  • It won't work if you do it for three nights and stop. The plan is 28.
It is for you if

you are over 50, your skin feels drier and thinner than it did, and you would rather learn a careful routine with cheap things than buy another expensive jar.

It is probably not for you if

you want a quick fix by Saturday, or you are under a dermatologist's treatment and have not asked them first.

Michiko Ando behind her small salon counter in Ginza

My counter in Ginza.

9:40 pmA note from Michiko

I was twenty-two when I first stood behind a cosmetics counter in Tokyo.

It was a big department store, and I stayed almost thirty years. I cleansed, tested and looked closely at the skin of thousands of women, of every age. I learned which expensive creams really worked, and which plain drugstore things quietly did the same job.

In my early fifties I moved to a small esthetic salon in Ginza. Facials, massage, skin counseling. Most of my regular clients were in their fifties, sixties and seventies, and many of them came back every month for years. I could see what changed their skin and what did not.

My mother never owned a gold-box cream. Every night she sat at a small wooden mirror and patted lotion into her cheeks with flat palms, and then she sealed it. Her mother did the same. I didn't think of it as a method until my American clients started asking me for it, again and again: how much, in what order, and is it the same at night and in the morning.

“How much, in what order, and with which hands. That is what I never had time to tell everyone at the counter.”

So I wrote it down, plainly, the way I would explain it if you sat in my chair. I'm not a doctor and I won't pretend to be. I'm a woman who looked at faces for thirty years and paid attention.

9:50 pmQuestions

What my clients asked me, and what you asked in the comments.

Can I use it in the morning and at night?

The seal belongs mostly to the night. The book has a chapter on when it helps in the morning and when it doesn't, and the morning shield you put on top so the sun doesn't undo your night.

Does Vaseline go on top of my night cream, or before it?

On top, as the last thing, over skin that is still damp. If you use two or three products, Chapter 13 tells you which ones need damp skin underneath and which don't.

I sleep on my side. Won't it all end up on my pillow?

Not with the side sleeper's night in Part Two: a smaller amount, pressed in, and a thin cotton towel over the pillowcase.

I don't want petroleum on my face. Is this still for me?

Yes. Part Seven gives the no-petroleum Ginza Night, every routine without Vaseline, with plant-based swaps and gentler steps for easily red skin.

Won't it give me white bumps or clog my pores?

It can, if it goes on too thick or in the wrong places. Chapter 15 is about exactly that: how much, where it never goes, and which skin should skip it.

Are you a doctor?

No. I'm an esthetician with thirty years at a cosmetics counter and a salon. Where something needs a doctor, a changing spot for example, the book says so plainly.

I'm not good with computers. How do I get it?

Press the button, pay on the secure page, and the book opens on the next screen. The same link comes to your email. You can read it on a phone or tablet, make the type bigger, or print the pages you want.

Is it a printed book?

No, it is an e-book (a PDF) you download right away. Nothing is posted to you. The night cards are made to be printed at home.

Can I buy it for my mother?

Of course. Buy it with your email and forward the download to her, or print the night cards and the 28-night plan for her mirror.

What if it isn't for me?

Email us within 30 days and you get a full refund. No questions.
